What Is Hypnotherapy?
Being in a state of hypnosis involves having a shift in your attention and level of open-ness to suggestions. This experience is often associated with normal everyday experiences, such as when you zone out while driving to work in the morning, or when you become drawn into a compelling TV show and stay up past your bedtime.
Hypnotherapy involves inducing this state of attentive awareness on purpose, and using it to create a therapeutic effect.
Once you are hypnotized, your therapist can give you helpful suggestions to overcome chronic pain, improve sleep, and reduce stress and anxiety.
How Does Hypnosis For Chronic Pain Work?
Since we now know that chronic pain is a brain-produced experience (the result of information coming from the body being processed as threatening), we need to turn our attention to the various processes that occur in the brain that result in pain.
This is where hypnosis can be very helpful. New research by scientists is beginning to show what happens in the brain when you are hypnotized.
Mostly notably, regions of the brain that are vigilant about their external environment become less active. Other areas become stronger, such as the ones that strengthen the bond between the mind and body.
Some of these connections influence the perception and processing of information that influences the amount of pain you experience.
When we combine the often profound impact that therapies such as pain neuroscience education has on the brain with hypnosis, we can produce results from the brain-down, while traditional therapies that involve the body, including exercise and massage, are working from body-up.
